Itinerary
Start your day with a 1 hour 30 minute drive from Reykjavik to Glanni Waterfall, located in the beautiful Borgarfjörður region. This stunning cascade, about 12 meters high, is surrounded by lush green landscapes, creating a perfect setting for photography and nature walks. Legend has it that a mischievous giant resides here, adding a touch of Icelandic folklore to the experience. You’ll spend 30 minutes at this picturesque site before heading to Deildartunguhver, Europe’s most powerful hot spring, just a 20-minute drive away. Known for its impressive flow of 180 liters of boiling water per second, Deildartunguhver is a geothermal marvel, with steam rising from the waters and creating a captivating atmosphere. You’ll have 15 minutes to explore the area and admire the surrounding geothermal landscapes.
Next, enjoy a 20-minute drive to Reykholtkirkja, a charming church in the village of Reykholt, built in 1878. This church is famous for its stained glass windows and its connection to Snorri Sturluson, one of Iceland’s most famous medieval poets and historians. Reykholt holds great historical and literary significance, and the church serves as a reminder of Iceland’s rich cultural heritage. You’ll have 15 minutes to explore the church and learn about its historical context.
From here, drive just 20 minutes to the Hraunfossar and Barnafoss Waterfalls, located near the village of Reykholt. Spend 75 minutes here, marveling at the contrasting beauty of these two waterfalls. Hraunfossar is a unique waterfall where water emerges from the Hallmundarhraun lava field, cascading gently over rocks into the Hvítá River. Barnafoss, also known as the “Children’s Falls,” has a more dramatic flow, with a tragic story tied to its name. The peaceful landscapes here are perfect for a tranquil walk and photography.
The final stop is Húsafell, a 20-minute drive away, where you’ll spend 15 minutes exploring the area’s rich history of stone art. Húsafell is known for its beautiful sculptures, many of which are inspired by Icelandic folklore and the region’s unique natural features. After this, enjoy the scenic journey back to Reykjavik, reflecting on the day’s experiences.
